Learning Beyond the Field: OKCPS Students Meet the Oklahoma City Spark

Jul 28, 2026

Sometimes the most important lessons in sports happen long before the first pitch.

Earlier this month, Fields & Futures partnered with Oklahoma City Public Schools and the Oklahoma City Spark to host a Lunch & Learn for middle school students from Roosevelt, Skyline, Jefferson, John Marshall, and Southeast Middle School. The event gave students the opportunity to hear directly from professional athletes about perseverance, confidence, and the mindset it takes to succeed – not just in sports, but in life.

The players shared stories about where their love of softball began and spoke honestly about the challenges they’ve faced along the way. One message especially resonated with students: “You’re going to fail more than you succeed, so you have to learn how to ride the roller coaster and not let it define you.” The players had insightful takeaways, encouraging students to remember that “The last thing you think is the first thing you’ll do,” emphasizing the importance of reframing negative thoughts and practicing a positive mindset every day.

The experience didn’t end there. On July 9, the students attended the Oklahoma City Spark game against the Utah Talons, where they watched the same athletes they had met just days earlier compete at the highest level.

Experiences like these help young athletes see what’s possible. By connecting students with role models who embody resilience, hard work, and determination, we’re building confidence, inspiring dreams, and creating pathways that extend far beyond the game.
