Fields & Futures, Sandridge Energy Introduce New Program to Help Show Support for Student-athletes

Dec 13, 2014

It was a big week at Oklahoma Centennial Mid-High School in Oklahoma City.

With the generous help of SandRidge Energy, Fields & Futures worked with Oklahoma City Public Schools Athletics and administration at Centennial Mid-High to create and introduce a new program titled “Champion Event Pass.” This feature story in The Oklahoman provides a great high level overview of how the program works and Tuesday night (Dec 9), we were able to see it in action!

What a lot of people don’t know or understand is OKCPS coaches and athletic directors rely on game ticket sales to fund the bulk of their program … everything from striping the field before a game, to paying for game officials, to contracting athletic trainers for an event, etc. Not to mention feeding their athletes and providing basic resources to play the game. The list goes on and on. No tickets, no funding.

So, when parents or supporters can’t afford the price of game admission, many students play with no one there to cheer them on.

That’s where the Champion Event Pass comes in.

With funding provided by SandRidge Energy, Fields & Futures was able to present Centennial Mid-High Site Athletic Coordinator Garrett Mantle a $12,000 check to help offset any lost revenues and to help with basic program expenses. Each student-athlete was then presented with two Champion Event Passes to give a parent or other important person in their life. For many parents, this pass will make the difference between attending or not attending a game.

With the community’s help and support, Fields & Futures and OKCPS Athletics will expand the program to every OKCPS middle school and high school in the district – a total of 15 school sites. We believe every child deserves to have their own cheering section, don’t you?

What Drives Capitol Hill and U.S. Grant Football?

U.S. Grant and Capitol Hill may be rivals, but their football programs have more in common than their annual "Southside Bedlam" rivalry game. From 2014-2020, the OSSAA allowed both programs to play as independents so they could create their own schedules and rebuild their programs. Now playing in Class 6A, neither team has found success in district play, but they also know the scoreboard isn't the only standard of success.
