In the realm of high school athletics, there are athletes, and then there is DJ.

Daryen Jefferson, known simply as DJ, isn’t just another student-athlete at Douglass High School in Oklahoma City – he’s a force to be reckoned with, wired a little differently from the rest.

The Moment

DJ’s love affair with long-distance running was apparent from a young age. What began as a mandatory exercise in elementary school quickly transformed into an all-consuming passion, eclipsing even his love for basketball. While others may see running as a chore, for DJ, it’s a calling. A chance to push himself to the limits and discover what he’s truly capable of.

But what truly sets DJ apart isn’t just his talent on the track or his dedication to the sport. It’s his mindset. DJ is a self-motivated powerhouse fueled by an unyielding desire to be the best version of himself in every aspect of his life. Whether it’s maintaining a stellar 4.5 GPA or committing fully to his training regimen, DJ approaches everything he does with unwavering determination and a refusal to settle for anything less than excellence.

The path to becoming an elite runner isn’t an easy one. But DJ runs toward the challenge, not away from it, even when the road is marked by early-morning training sessions and late-night solo runs. Where many have left the race altogether, DJ has remained resolute in his pursuit of greatness, never losing sight of the dreams that drive him forward.

Finding His People

One pivotal moment in DJ’s journey came in 2023 when he had the opportunity to compete at the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival. Surrounded by some of the country’s best high school and collegiate runners, DJ felt an instant connection, a sense of belonging he had never experienced before. For the first time, he was among his people, individuals who shared his passion for running and understood the sacrifices he had made to pursue his dreams.

The Next Chapter

As DJ looks ahead to the next chapter of his journey – college athletics – he does so with a sense of optimism and excitement. With offers from colleges across the country, DJ is poised to continue his running career at the collegiate level, surrounded by teammates who will push him to new heights. And while the road ahead may be challenging, DJ wouldn’t have it any other way. After all, for him, turning brick walls into mere hurdles is what makes it all worthwhile.

In DJ’s story, we see more than just a talented student-athlete. We see a young man who dares to defy expectations and forge his own path. And as he continues to leave his mark on OKCPS and beyond, one thing is clear…

DJ is in a lane of his own, and he’s just hitting his stride.

What Drives Capitol Hill and U.S. Grant Football?

U.S. Grant and Capitol Hill may be rivals, but their football programs have more in common than their annual "Southside Bedlam" rivalry game. From 2014-2020, the OSSAA allowed both programs to play as independents so they could create their own schedules and rebuild their programs. Now playing in Class 6A, neither team has found success in district play, but they also know the scoreboard isn't the only standard of success.
