Fields & Futures recently partnered with New York Times best-selling author Arshay Cooper, the “A Most Beautiful Thing Inclusion Fund,” and Wheeler Middle School PE teacher Fai Madni to launch a brand-new rowing program – creating an exciting new opportunity for student-athletes in Oklahoma City’s urban core.
As part of our mission to get more kids on more teams, this new initiative introduces Wheeler students to a sport many had never imagined trying. With support from the “A Most Beautiful Thing Inclusion Fund,” Wheeler Middle School received eight brand-new Concept2 indoor rowing machines, allowing students to experience rowing during PE classes and through a newly formed after-school rowing club.
A New Opportunity to Discover
The launch of the Wheeler rowing program began with students learning fundamentals on indoor machines before taking their first trip to Riversport OKC – where they experienced rowing on the water for the very first time.
And for many students, it was more than just a new sport – it was a moment of growth.
“I felt so nervous and scared because I’ve never been anywhere near the water or done something like this before,” said Wheeler student Eddie. “I wanted to just skip practice and go home. However, now that I’ve done it… it was so much fun, I can’t wait til next Wednesday!”
Experiences like Eddie’s were shared among the group, highlighting the power of introducing new opportunities to students and helping them push beyond their comfort zones.
Building Confidence Through Rowing
The Fields & Futures rowing initiative is part of our broader 2028 Olympics strategy – activating and engaging Oklahoma City’s urban core youth leading up to the Games. With Riversport set to host Olympic events in 2028, this effort helps create meaningful connections between students and the global moment happening in their own backyard. By introducing rowing at the middle school level, students gain exposure to an Olympic sport while developing teamwork, discipline, and confidence.
“Thanks to Fields & Futures, our students at Wheeler can experience rowing, build confidence, and open doors to future opportunities and scholarships,” said Wheeler PE teacher and rowing coach Fai Madni.
More Kids on More Teams
This spring marked Wheeler’s first official day on the water – a milestone moment for students and the beginning of what we hope is a growing rowing pipeline across OKC.
The Wheeler rowing program is another example of how partnership and investment can create meaningful opportunities for OKCPS students. As we continue working toward the 2028 Olympics, Fields & Futures remains committed to expanding access, introducing new sports, and helping more students discover the life-changing benefits of being on a team.
Because when we create new opportunities, we get more kids on more teams – and that’s where the real impact begins.
