Fighting Childhood Obesity

Sep 5, 2016

In this article titled “Fighting Childhood Obesity” by Catherine Arnst, Senior Communications Officer at Robert Wood Johnson Foundation she states, “Access to safe play spaces is a crucial but often overlooked element in keeping kids healthy,” while reminding us “Just 10 to 20 percent of a person’s health is dependent on the health care they receive from doctors, nurses and hospitals – the other 80 percent is inextricably linked to the world we live in outside the clinic, including safe places to play.”

But the benefit doesn’t stop there. In this same article, Ms. Arnst mentions a seventh-grader named Dario who was given the opportunity to participate in Soccer for Success, a youth development program of the U.S. Soccer Foundation. “I used to cut school all the time, and then my principal talked me into joining the soccer team. I feel like it’s the best thing in my life, and I can’t play unless I come to school, so now I come every day.”

When you support Fields & Futures, you’re helping young students like Dario find something to care about … that cares about them. A team they can belong to, a sport they can love, a healthier lifestyle. A place where friendships are made and lifetime memories are created. And where the path to graduation becomes clear.

It may start with a field but it ends with something much greater.

Keeping Girls in the Game: Supporting Female Student-Athletes Matters More Than Ever

Every spring, OKCPS sports fields and tracks buzz with the energy and promise of a new season. Yet behind this excitement lies a troubling trend: sports participation among female students drops by 8% as they transition to high school, while boys' participation jumps to 35%. Find out why keeping girls in the game when they're at their most vulnerable is one of our biggest priorities and what we're doing to put more girls on more teams.

Swinging Into Spring Sports

Spring sports are in full swing in Oklahoma City Public Schools, and it's the busiest sports season of the year. 4,176 OKCPS students played sports last spring, and that number is certain to be even higher this year. This spring, Fields & Futures programs will support coaches and athletes participating in track & field, golf, soccer, and cheer through OKCPS, the YMCA, and OKC PAL.
