We are proud to recognize the 16 male and female Student-Athletes of the Year from OKCPS high schools for their performance on the field, in the classroom, and in their communities. Even in the face of a worldwide pandemic that cut spring sports and their senior year short, their commitment to athletics and academics never wavered.
During this season of adversity and isolation, where there are no sports to lean on and morale is shaken, our message to the kids and communities of Oklahoma City Public Schools is simple: We're not giving up, and neither are you! Because if sports have taught us anything, it’s that there is always time to rally.
Growing up, Javier Hernandez's passion for soccer fueled him to succeed. Today, he is Oklahoma's first undocumented immigrant to become an attorney and CEO of The Fútbol Factory, an organization that provides affordable and accessible fútbol for all.
As a former college and professional athlete, Joshua Norman earned his spot on the field. Now, the same grit that defined his playing career has planted him in Oklahoma City where he is coaching against the odds at John Marshall High School.
Wheeler Middle School was formed in 2019 when Oklahoma City Public Schools restructured the district. With the help of Fields & Futures, the new school is constructing a culture of hope and opportunity through team sports.
