The Impact of Sports on Youth Development

At Fields & Futures, we stand firmly on the conviction that sports provide students with more than just physical activity and competition; they offer a sense of belonging, identity, and purpose. When young people join a team, they find a family and a community that supports them.

Access to quality playing fields and the opportunity to participate in sports at no cost from elementary through high school in Oklahoma City’s urban core pave the way for a brighter future. The availability of top-notch facilities and coaching elevates the district’s sports culture, enhancing the level of competition and opening doors to further opportunities in sports beyond high school. For many OKCPS student-athletes, sports participation leads to a happier, healthier life.

The OKCPS students recognized by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and Oklahoma Coaches Association All-Sports & Scholar-Athlete Awards Ceremony embody our “Hope in Action” motto. Their achievements demonstrate the positive influence sports can have on young people, proving that with access and opportunity, they can achieve great things both on and off the field.

Congratulations to Daryen Jefferson, James Allen, Chloe Threatt, Luisa Talavera, Jailyn Ramirez, and Cameron Pearson on their well-deserved recognition. Their accomplishments inspire us to continue providing opportunities for all students to play, grow, and thrive.

What Drives Capitol Hill and U.S. Grant Football?

U.S. Grant and Capitol Hill may be rivals, but their football programs have more in common than their annual "Southside Bedlam" rivalry game. From 2014-2020, the OSSAA allowed both programs to play as independents so they could create their own schedules and rebuild their programs. Now playing in Class 6A, neither team has found success in district play, but they also know the scoreboard isn't the only standard of success.
