NEW YOUTH LEAGUE HAS PRE-SEASON SCRIMMAGE
The Youth League had their pre-season scrimmage Saturday, October 24, at Jefferson Middle School. The scrimmage started at 9 a.m. and ended at 2 p.m., and had eight volleyball teams and seven football teams participating. Given our short timeframe, it’s been a really successful launch.
We were able to find homes for all players even if their schools didn’t have enough players to make a full roster. Several schools were just on the verge of having enough players, but not quite enough for a full team roster. At the same time, we had several teams with just a bare minimum of players, but enough to put them on the league schedule. We transplanted students who didn’t have a home, and placed these “free agents” onto teams that were already in the league. It’s allowed us to more fully develop the rosters for teams that were a little bit shallow and it’s allowed the teams to have scrimmages when they practice. We’ll be working on finding ways to best run their offenses or defenses with players on only one side of the ball and one side of the court.
Seeing these kids from all the different schools, watching them meet each other and becoming teammates is so rewarding. This is an opportunity for them to make new friends and connections in the community. It goes beyond just pride for school. It’s community pride!
